Cathedral Art Out: And Experience of Art, Conversation, & Community: "Art as Activisim"
12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Church of the Advocate 1801 W. Diamond St., Philadelphia, PA 19121
Join us at the historic Church of the Advocate (Episcopal) for a tour of the 14 murals depicting vignettes of the Black Experience in America including slavery, emancipation, and scenes fromthe Civil Rights Movement. Commissioned by Father Paul Washington and painted by artists Walter Edmonds and Richard J. Watson from 1973 to 1976, the murals are a response to black parishioners who felt that the African-American experience was not validated in the church despite the fact that the majority of the community was African-American. The murals have long served a source of inspiration and guidance to all who work toward justice and equity throughout Philadelphia. The Art Out Group will meet up at 12:30 at the Church of the Advocate for the tour followed by a time of food, conversation and reflection.
