AN EVENING OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN SPIRITUALS, POETRY & NARRATIVES
An evening of sacred music with baritone, Dr. Lourin Plant.
On Tuesday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m., Philadelphia Cathedral will present an outstanding concert by Dr. Lourin Plant of African-American spirituals. Dr. Plant, who is professor of voice at Rowan University, will be accompanied by Dr. Riyehee Hong, Director Music and the Arts. The program will also include poetry and dramatic readings of prominent African-Amercian writers recited by actor David Bollar.
Dr. Plant’s presentations on African-American spirituals have been featured in state, regional and international conferences and his articles have appeared in Classical Singer Magazine. He appears both as counter tenor and baritone throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-West states. He has performed with Cincinnati Opera Festival, Cincinnati May Festival, Dayton Opera, Amherst Early Music Festival, Philadelphia Classical Symphony, Philadelphia Ancient Voices, Voces Novae et Antiquae, Piffaro and the Jim Thorpe Bach Festival and in the touring ensembles of Michael Crawford, Barbara Streisand, and Russell Watson.
He has performed in ensembles with The Crossings, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Singers Chorale in the Philadelphia Academy of Music, the Kimmel Center and Carnegie Hall. He has most recently returned from a successful tour of Ukraine by way of Kiev, completing recital programs of African-American spirituals given at conservatories in Kharkiv, Poltava, and Sumy.
