The Rev. Dr. Phillip C. Bennett, Canon for Spiritual Life
The Rev. Phillip Bennett has served in the Diocese of Pennsylvania since 1982. He has been Associate Rector at St. Mark’s, Locust Street, Philadelphia; Priest-in-Charge, St. Peter’s Germantown; Assisting Priest, St. Peter’s Pine Street, Philadelphia, and most recently as Assisting Priest at St. Martin-in-the Fields, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia. In addition, he has been in full-time practice as a clinical psychologist for over 25 years and has an office in the Art Museum Area.
Phillip Graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Beloit College. He holds an M. Div from Seabury Western Theological Seminary, an S.T.M. from Union Theological Seminary in the Program of Psychiatry and religion and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Union University. He is a Graduate of the Shalem Institute Spiritual Direction Training Program. He has been the Director Emeritus of the Graduate Program in Pastoral Care and Counseling at Neumann University where he still teaches courses. He has served as the Chair of the Spiritual Growth Committee of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, and as the President of the Philadelphia Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology. He is currently on the Faculty of Credo, a national program for clergy wellness and vocational discernment where he focuses on clergy mental health. He also consults with various denomination on clergy wellness as well as consulting with parishes in the diocese in the area of spiritual formation. Phillip frequently gives retreats and workshops on the integration of psychology and spirituality and is particularly interested in contemplative prayer and meditation.
When he is not wearing his clerical or clinical hats, he “moonlights” as a singer-songwriter, giving benefit concerts for non-profit organizations as well as playing other gigs around the city.
He is delighted to be a part of the Cathedral’s dynamic ministry with its rich and flexible liturgy, its commitment to social outreach, and its welcoming of the arts.
