St. Barnabas Mission
A ministry of compassion and service that transforms lives.
Philadelphia Cathedral is pleased to support the outstanding work of the Episcopal Community Services St. Barnabas Mission. The mission provides safe, decent housing and support to help homeless families get back on their feet. Located at 60th Street and Girard Avenue, the 24-hour facility provides housing and services for 105 homeless women and children every day.
An enhanced shelter, St. Barnabas offers more than just a place to stay. Under the supervision of shelter director Victoria Bennett, a professional staff works with residents to prepare mothers and children for school, work and independent living.
The Mission is committed to helping mothers and children reach their full potential. The shelter has a licensed child care facility that offers preschool, after-school enrichment, and summer camp for children staying at the shelter with their mothers.

These programs consistently receive positive feedback from parents and students, and Episcopal Community Services has documented improvements in literacy skills, homework completion and school attendance among program participants. An on-site computer lab allows youth and mothers to improve technical skills and use the internet.
After-School at St. Barnabas Mission The enriching after-school program at St. Barnabas Mission serves 25 students, ages 5 to 12, who are staying at the shelter with their mothers. The on-site program offers homework help, arts and science workshops, physical activities and supervised recreation during the high-risk after-school hours, allowing mothers to pursue education and employment.
Butterfly Preschool at St. Barnabas Mission The Butterfly Preschool at St. Barnabas Mission provides licensed child care and incorporates an early education program for children ages 13 months through 5 years. Butterfly offers a high-quality learning experience for homeless toddlers in a safe, nurturing environment, which enables mothers to work or go to school.
