The Eucharist, also called Holy Communion or The Lord’s Supper and other names, is a Christian sacrament commemorating, by consecrating bread and wine, the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before his arrest, and eventual crucifixion, when he gave them bread saying, “This is my body”, and wine saying, “This is my blood.”[1][2] The Holy Eucharist is the the principal service of the Episcopal Church.
In some churches it is celebrated quite simply, without music, early on Sunday morning. When celebrated at a later hour on Sundays, or on other great Christian days such as Christmas Easter or Pentectost, music and a sermon are customary.
While some parts of the services are always the same, others change. At the Holy Eucharist, for example, two or three Bible selections are read. These change each Sunday. So do the psalms. Certain of the prayers also change, in order to provide variety. Page numbers for parts of the service printed elsewhere in the Book are usually announced or given in the service leaflet.
