Congratulations to Riyehee Hong, our Director of Music and the Arts, on her graduation from the University of Houston as a Doctor of Musical Arts. Riyehee will have her doctorate conferred on her at a graduation ceremony in May.

On April 13 the cathedral community said thank you and goodbye to seminarian Jon Niketh, who has served at the cathedral with such distinction over the last 8 months, and who in June will be ordained in the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.  In the worship pattern of the Early Church, the Great Vigil of Easter was celebrated before day break on Easter Day. In the footsteps of the women who went to the tomb of Jesus “toward the dawn of the first day of the week” (Matt 28:1) the faithful assembled at the cathedral at 5 am on Sunday March 23 to see the Paschal Candle, lit from the new fire in the cathedral garden, carried into the dark and cavernous cathedral as a sign of Christ’s light penetrating a darkened world.
Following the traditional readings from the Scriptures recounting God’s rescue of his people throughout history, rites of Christian initiation were administered, and the first Eucharist of Easter celebrated. Bishop Frank Turner, retired Suffragan Bishop of Pennsylvania, presided. Jane Kamp, one of those admitted to full membership at the Vigil, comments;
"I was particularly moved when I looked across the sanctuary and saw the faces illuminated by candelight. It struck me that the last time I had that vision was at the end of the Christmas Eve service. What a wonderful continuum to have the Easter Vigil service begin that way, and for our journey to continue amidst the theme of light."
