The Artist in Residence Program at the Philadelphia Cathedral is designed to support local artists, to bring new thoughts and ideas to the Cathedral community, and to enrich the Cathedral’s liturgical space with high quality art work. Contemporary artists can help broaden the horizons of our
faith community, and challenge us to think in new ways about old
truths and familiar stories.
Each Artist in Residence receives the use of a large studio in the Cathedral House for the year of their Residency, and is expected in return to contribute a permanently installed piece of art for the Cathedral. Artists in Residence also participate in Philadelphia Open Studio Tours, providing the larger community to connect with their work and the Cathedral.
Current Artist in Residence
Zoë Cohen
June 2008-June 2009
Zoë Cohen is a
visual artist who works conceptually in a wide range of materials and
modalities. Using materials as varied as fruit juice, ink, breast milk, and her
own blood, she draws upon the visual resonances in our bodies to our ancient
ancestors to create drawings, sculptures, and installations.
Zoë is also committed
to projects that manifest a vision of life in which creative acts represent a
normative model for humanity. Her recent public projects are The Listening
Station and Show Someone How You Feel About Something, a public drawing
project. These projects have been presented in public spaces as well as at West
Philadelphia’s International House, and the historic Powel House in Old City.
Zoë grew up in the Boston area, and received
her BA in Fine Arts from Haverford College and her MFA from Brooklyn College,
where she developed both the studio and public art modalities in which she
works today. Zoë was a leader of her class of MFA students who successfully
fought the censorship of their MFA Thesis Exhibition.Zoë
has also been an artist in residence at the Vermont
Studio Center,
and Philadelphia’s
40th Street
Artist-in-Residence. She has exhibited her work in Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Berlin, and Philadelphia. Her most recent work draws
parallels between ancient symbol systems and biblical mythology with modern
belief systems, political struggles, and Jewish identity.
