The Rev. Gerald S. Collins

The Reverend Gerald S. Collins (Jay) serves the Diocese of Pennsylvania in the ministry of an Interim Rector. He has served as both Interim Rector and Rector in the Diocese.

A native of Baltimore, MD, and a son of St. James’, Lafayette Square, Jay is a graduate of Morgan State University, having earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. He holds the degrees of Master of Professional Studies in Church Administration from New York Theological Seminary and Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. His graduate thesis at Union was entitled "A Keeper of the Charge - An Examination of Absalom Jones' Work in the Free African Community of Philadelphia:1792-1818." Jay received a Certificate of Summer Study in Biblical and Theological Studies from the University of Oxford, Oxford, UK. He has taken courses in The Appreciative Way/Appreciative Inquiry, which focuses on the developmental process of transitional ministry.

In the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, Jay has served on the following committees and commissions: The Program and Budget Committee, Commission on Ministry, and Environmental Initiative Committee. He chaired the Diocese of Maryland’s Summit On the City with the theme “Unemployment and the Church’s Response.”  In collaboration with the Maryland Chapter of UBE, he hosted a conference, workshops, and a service of worship commemorating the life, prophetic witness, and extraordinary leadership of the Rev. Absalom Jones. Jay served on the board of St. Stephen's Court Apartments and the advisory boards of Episcopal Community Services of Maryland and Baltimore Healthy Start. In the Diocese of Long Island, he served on the Diocesan Council and chaired the Budget and Finance Committee. He has published sermons for the Episcopal Church’s Sermons That Work and collects for the Office of Black Ministries. Jay is a George Freeman Bragg Fellow (1996–1998) and a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
